The Ultimate Packing List for Your Next Yoga Retreat

Yoga retreats are the perfect way to escape the cold, the craziness of the day to day, or expand your yoga practice. But if you’re thinking of going on a retreat (or already have one booked), you’ll want to make sure you have everything you need to make your trip successful, fun, and relaxing. From yoga mats to towels, here’s the ultimate packing list for your next yoga retreat.

  1. Yoga Clothing

As a general rule, look for clothing that is light, breathable, and wicks away moisture. Avoid synthetic fabrics like nylon and spandex. Remember– try to bring several pairs of yoga pants in case you can’t get to laundry during your trip. (We have Done for You Laundry available at Anamaya, but it does take a day or two to get back to you so make sure you bring plenty of clothing!)

  1. Towels

Although towels are an essential part of any yoga retreat, there’s a wide variety to choose from and they aren’t all created equal. You can get by with just one towel, but that one towel should be fairly large (around 50 inches or longer) so you can sit on it if your yoga mat is too slippery to sustain your practice.

  1. Skincare Products

When it comes to your skin, don’t skimp on quality products. Keep these items in your carry-on bag: moisturizer (SPF 15 or higher) and moisturizing eye cream. If you have acne, pack acne-fighting products like a benzoyl peroxide wash or salicylic acid gel. The humidity is different here in the jungle, and the sun is definitely hotter – so it is best to come prepared!

  1. Journal

Taking a yoga retreat is a great way to get away from it all and bringing a journal along is a helpful way to get into a reflective mindset. Whether you bring a few sheets of paper or a leather-bound journal, having something handy to take notes is essential to any retreat. Make a habit of journaling regularly throughout the trip and you’ll see just how transformative the experience is as you read through each entry.

  1. Massage Balls

Bringing a couple of small, soft massage balls is perfect for getting out those knots during your retreat, especially since you are doing yoga, going on adventures and using new muscles!

  1. Comfortable Shoes

While on a yoga retreat, bring comfortable closed-toed shoes such as running shoes or sandals to wear throughout your day. Since Anamaya has several adventures like the waterfall, the hike to town, scuba diving, surfing and so much more – having a good pair of walking shoes is crucial! When considering sneakers, be sure to get a pair that are breathable as this will help prevent sweat buildup.

  1. Yoga Blocks

Yoga blocks are another retreat must-have. Blocks are especially useful when you’re new to yoga and need a little extra help achieving full postures, or if you’re recovering from an injury. There are different shapes and sizes of blocks available—make sure yours fits well in your bag so it doesn’t add unwanted bulk. (We have blocks available for you to use here at Anamaya, but for the sake of other retreats, make sure they have them or you bring your own!)

If you’re looking to spend some time at a yoga retreat, it’s important to be prepared. When you’re in the middle of nature, surrounded by pure relaxation and the opportunity to reflect, you don’t want to worry about not having the right clothes or supplies with you. This packing list will help make sure that you have everything you need on your next yoga retreat.
