Michelle Garcia

Michelle Garcia aka First Nations Yogini is the founder of Two Rivers Yoga, an international yoga school uniting traditional and modern yoga through authenticity and inclusivity. Michelle, an indigenous yoga teacher hailing from a small and remote Canadian town. Her path to yoga began when she was working as a barista, and one night after hours, the coffee shop closed down and turned into a pop up yoga class. Hooked from the very first savasana, Michelle has been dedicated to the practice of yoga since early 2009, and began teaching in 2015.

Michelle has continued to expand her knowledge and expertise in the field by completing over 1,500 hours in training since then and now has over 6,500 teaching hours. She has been facilitating yoga teacher trainings and continuing education programs since 2021, leading over 30 trainings throughout Canada, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica and Peru, and was recently featured on the cover of OM magazine in their Summer 2024 issue.

Michelle is well-versed in the hatha and vinyasa styles, as well as prenatal yoga. She is also a YACEP and has obtained additional certifications in yin, restorative, and yoga nidra. With a teaching style best described as a harmonious blend of energetic asana practices interwoven with yogic philosophy, Michelle’s ultimate aim as a guide is to foster a sense of equilibrium and serenity in people’s lives by creating a sacred space, nurturing silence and encouraging students to embark on a voyage of self-discovery within the realms of yoga. When not in the studio, she enjoys making margaritas and basking in the sun. She has yet to meet a cat she didn’t want to befriend.

Danielle Hoguet

YTT Assistant

Danielle Hoguet is a yoga teacher from the city of Philadelphia, with a doctorate degree in Physical Therapy. Her fascination with movement and the human body started at a young age when she fully immersed herself in the world of dance. Dance injuries led her to pursue a career as a physical therapist, and her desire to find a new practice to fill her heart and soul led her to yoga. She took her first yoga teacher training in 2017 and has been teaching ever since.

As a lover of learning, Danielle continues to evolve as both a student and teacher of yoga. In addition to completing 500 hours of yoga teacher training, she has certifications in reiki and restorative yoga, and over 2,000 teaching hours. She has been facilitating yoga teacher trainings and workshops since 2021, and considers educating new teachers one of her greatest joys.

As a yoga instructor Danielle believes in creating a strong foundational knowledge of alignment, along with fluidity of breath and activation of the energetic body. Her expertise as a physical therapist allows her to guide students through a safe practice, and accommodate any injuries, restrictions and conditions. As a facilitator Danielle believes in holding space for her students and encourages them to teach (and live) yoga from the heart. When she isn’t teaching, Danielle is typically planning her next great adventure and playing with her adorable dog, with whom she is completely obsessed.

Few teachers manage to reach so many students while maintaining an authentic approach. I can’t recommend booking a retreat or teacher training with her enough!” – Fanny

YTT Program Curriculum

Techniques, Training, Practice (75 hrs)

In this training we’ll explore 51 asanas (yoga poses) and some of their variations, learning how to teach them from a place of inclusivity and safety. This course will prepare you to teach both Hatha and Vinyasa styles as well as introduce you to Yin, Yoga Nidra, Restorative and Prenatal Yoga. Pranayama techniques are taught through experience, as well as mudra, mantra, and meditation to fully connect you to both the experience and yourself. We will take a deep dive into the Chakras through a psychology lens and learn ways to incorporate this into your offerings.

Asanas – the physical postures

There is no requirement for having mastery of any specific yoga pose. There is also no required amount of yoga experience necessary for this program. Come as you are. The ability to do Chaturanga or headstand etc, are not required for this yoga teacher training, or to consider yourself a yogi. Together we will explore 51 asanas and you do not need to be able to do the pose in order to teach the pose effectively.

Meditation, Pranayama, Mantra, Mudra

Many styles of meditation and pranayama will be taught throughout the program and there will be plenty of opportunity to both teach and enjoy these. Each class taught every morning will include both meditation and pranayama. Exploration of mudras and mantras will round out the program, with an opportunity for an evening of Kirtan.

Anatomy, Physiology & Alignment (20 hrs)

During this training we will dissect the poses to gain a deeper understanding of which areas of the body are experiencing a sense of opening or strengthening, tension or compression, and how to keep practitioners safe while moving through the postures. There will be discussion around common misalignments and the use of props to compliment an alignment that is most supportive for the individual practitioner.

Philosophy & Spiritual Development (50 hrs)

Yoga is often translated as union; Union of mind, body, and spirit. Through the practice of yoga and study of yogic history and philosophy, such as Patanjali’s 8 limbed path, the yamas and niyamas, and through the sister science of yoga, ayurveda, we will philosophize on the meaning of these sacred texts and consider how to apply them in our day to day lives, on and off the mat. By working with the chakras and the subtle body, this program will help to gain insight on where we may experience an excess or deficiency in our lives, and how we might go forward working to find balance.

Teaching Methodology (40 hrs)

During this training, you will learn how to sequence a well rounded class, appropriately opening and strengthening the necessary areas of the body to obtain a peak pose and leave the practitioner with a sense of balance. We love a theme, and this will be a big focus as well, asking you to consider your “why” of leading a class and what you’re looking to offer your students.

Clear, concise cueing is a focus throughout this program and every day you will have the opportunity to practice teaching to fellow students to hone your skills. We also break down how to curate a quality playlist that follows your sequencing and makes sense for the classes you’re offering. Holding space for your future students is important and will be developed during the program.

Practicum (10 hrs)

You will be required to teach a class at the end of the program, but please note that there is no expectation for this to be the most amazing class a person has ever taken. It’s an opportunity to apply everything you’ve learned, whether you choose to be a teacher, or just want to deepen your personal practice and understanding of yoga. We become a big family, and we’re all here to support one another. There is plenty of dedicated time to plan your final class, and I will be with you along the way to support you throughout. You will be completely prepared for this.

Ethics & The Business of Yoga (5 hrs)

So you want to be a yoga teacher and you’ve taken a 200hr training, now what? Being a yoga teacher is an act of love for the practice and there are many things to consider if choosing to apply what you’ve learned out to the public. We’ll discuss everything from who and what is Yoga Alliance, and why do I care? How much to expect to be paid, what costs are associated, insurance and liability, marketing, and everything in between. We’ll explore and discuss the ethics of a yoga teacher, and ponder ways to approach uncomfortable situations that you may encounter as a teacher.

How a 3 Week YTT Schedule Works

One of the most beautiful aspects of this training is the community we build. Every training I have ever taken has left me with long-lasting friendships with people I would have never met had it not been for our choice to join the same teacher training. It can be interesting heading back into our typical lives after a YTT. Chances are you will have made shifts in your mindset, habits and daily routine, and it’s an absolute blessing to have spent your 3 weeks with others who have enjoyed the same experience. They become your sounding board and continued support system outside of the program.

During our 3 weeks together we will eat, sleep and breathe yoga. The beauty of yoga is the unity we experience, and through this program, we connect on a deeper level with one another. I always say that you get out of the program what you put in. I like to encourage vulnerability and open dialogue. I want everyone to feel that if they have something they’d like to express, this is a safe and supportive space to do this. Cueing our students into postures is one way of communicating, and so is the art of listening. A skill that translates both on and off of the mat.

Change is inevitable; transformation is a choice. Change is always happening. Transformation is what we do with that change. It is a conscious choice. I certainly made some big shifts after my first YTT; leaving the corporate retail banking scene and diving face-first into teaching yoga, but that doesn’t mean that this happens for everyone; nor that it needs to. I hope that if anything, we all leave learning a little more about yoga, and a lot more about ourselves. By the end of this program, you will be able to lead well-thought-out, holistic yoga classes, whether you choose to teach in a studio or guide yourself at home.

Testimonials

“I had the honor of sharing space with a small group for my first 200 hr YTT with Michelle. She cultivated a truly warm space for spreading knowledge, evoking discussions and seeking love within was encouraged. I was lucky enough to be part of a group she hosted that held each other through pain, hardship and love. This wouldn’t have been possible without Michelle. Her divine energy is contagious and there’s no doubt in my mind that I will seek her guidance again. Learning from her is a gift that keeps giving.” – Kat
