A great hotel near the airport in San Jose Costa Rica

Many people coming to Anamaya ask about a hotel near the airport, either to stay a night before heading out to Montezuma, or perhaps after getting your fill of the beach here at Anamaya, spend an extra few days to explore the mountain regions of Costa Rica. From here, you can visit one of several volcanoes, see the cloud forest, go white-water rafting, or visit a coffee plantation. (None of these particular activities are available in the Southern Nicoya Peninsula where Anamaya is.)

The Adventure Inn Airport Hotel in Costa Rica lies just 2-3 minutes drive east from the San Jose (Alajuela) International airport (where you’re most likely to land) on the Pan American Highway. It’s also 14.2 km or 10-20 minutes from the Tobias Bolanos Pavas International Airport, which is San Jose’s secondary airport and serves Nature Air flights to tourist destinations like Tamarindo, Nosara, Tambor/Montezuma, Punta Islita and Tortuguero. Adventure Inn is also a mere 14.7 km drive from San Jose’s central district.

The hotel lies in the lush valleys of the San Jose suburbs. The location of the hotel is therefore ideal for exploring not only the urban attractions of San Jose, but also the rainforests, waterfalls, rivers and volcanoes of Costa Rica. San Jose’s museums, nightlife, shopping and the San Jose Central Market are ten minutes away by car. Guests can also avail of some of the best tours to the surrounding areas that leave from the hotel.

Long Term Rates: It is also possible to book your room weekly and monthly at reduced rates. For instance, the weekly rate for a standard room for two guests is $69.30 per day if you pay by cash. If you’re staying for a month, you pay $56.70 a day by cash. Weekly and monthly tariffs are expected to be paid in full at the time of check-in.

Check In/Out: The official check-in time is 2 pm and check-out time is noon. However the hotel can be flexible depending on the arrival times of guests.

Pets: Some rooms are also reserved for guests with well-behaved pets, with an additional $10 charged towards sanitation costs.

Amenities

The hotel offers 34 rooms with all the basic amenities. Each room comes with a spacious, modern tiled bathroom with either a Jacuzzi or a hot water bath/shower. The air conditioned rooms contain orthopedic beds for good quality of sleep. All rooms have free internet connections, writing table and chairs, cable TV with 60 channels in Spanish and English, coffee maker, hair dryer and direct telephones with free local and international calls. A complimentary buffet breakfast, room service from the hotel’s restaurant, free luggage storage, laundry service, maid service and an optional in-room safety deposit box at $1 a day are also included in the room tariffs.

Other amenities include a 24-hour fully equipped gym and a solar-heated outdoor infinity pool and Jacuzzi. Guests interested in cosmetic surgery, dental work and eye surgery will be referred by the hotel staff to reputable and sanitary private hospitals with English-speaking medical doctors. The hotel has its own American nurse 24 hours on call for guests who need medical attention.

The hotel is also well-located for business travelers who want to attend conferences, being situated in Costa Rica’s Free Trade Zone and close to the Juan Santamaria International Airport. Three of Costa Rica’s largest conference centers, conventions and casinos are located near the hotel, making it a good accommodation option for business travelers.

The Restaurant

A Mayan/Olmec theme runs throughout the hotel décor and even carries into the in-house restaurant, the MoonGlow Eatery, with its art and statues.

The homemade breakfast buffets at the MoonGlow Eatery include American Style or Tico style choices, ranging from traditional gallo pinto, pancakes, eggs any style, French toast with maple syrup, tropical fruits and other items.

Costa Rica’s historical and cultural background which includes the Mayan and Aztec cultures in the north, the Incas to the south, Mediterranean colonizers and Caribbean and African slave culture have all contributed to the region’s cuisine. This is evident in the lunch and dinner menus which include salads, soups and full-course meals designed around local cuisine. The cocktail bar is open daily until 11 pm and beyond, and the restaurant closes at 9.30 pm.

Nearby Attractions and Organized Tours

The hotel is central to many of Costa Rica’s national parks. The Braulio Carillo National Park and its Barva volcano lie just a few kilometers away, as do the Turrialba Volcano National Park, the Poas Volcano National Park and the Juan Castro Blanco National Park to the north.

Even closer lie the Valle del Sol Golf Course and the Centro Compero Los Reyes Golf Course to the south. The Cariari Country Club with its golf course also lies just behind the hotel.

The hotel arranges for economical car rentals or 4WD rentals for guests to take on their own adventure tours. Guests who want to join tour groups will also find many tours organized by the hotel at low prices, though some may have a minimum number of required participants. Guests can scan through the tour options offered on the official website, and inform the hotel of their choice. The bookings will be made by the hotel staff on your behalf.

Some of the tours offered include day trips for rafting on the way to the Arenal Volcano for various experience levels, a whitewater rafting and canopy tour combo on Rio Sarapiqui and the Braulio Carillo National Park, and a visit to the nearby Toucan Rescue Ranch.

Longer tours include 2 to 4-day trips to Tortuguero’s National Parks and river, 3-day trips to Arenal and Monteverde and 10 or 12 day diving trips to Cocos Island. Guests can also enjoy Rainforest Horseback Riding tours, Hacienda Blue Spring tours which include rafting, canopy, rappelling and hiking, deep sea and coastal fishing, bungee jumping, bird-watching and other volcano and canopy tours.

Many of the tours allow children at discounted rates but have minimum age requirements. Overnight tours are required to be paid for in advance. Cancellations up to 48 hours in advance are allowed. Some of the tours are organized by third-party tour operators, but the hotel takes full responsibility for the reputability and safety of its recommendations.

The Adventure Inn hotel staff is bilingual and guests usually praise their hospitality and competence. Although it’s not technically in San Jose they are listed there in Trip Advisor, and fluctuate between the #1 and #2 positions out of 87 hotels. The owners really understand the hospitality business and will take very good care of you.
